Vat Savitri Vrat

Today is the Vat Savitri Puja. A beautiful tradition with the intention of seeking blessings from all Gods for the welfare of one's family.
Women encircle the Banyan tree and tie a red-yellow thread around the trunk. Water, fruits and sweets are offered to the Gods. It is believed Brahma resides in the roots of the Vat tree, Vishnu in the trunk, and Shiva in the top most part. Together the whole tree symbolizes Savitri. The Vat tree also symbolizes longevity and strength.
Savitri was the devoted wife of Satyavan. When her husband died, she fought with the God of death, Yamraj, and was able to bring her husband back to life. She symbolizes a woman who is devoted to the welfare of her husband and family. One who seeks a long life, health, and happiness for her husband and children.
Women pray to Savitri for similar courage and devotion--Blessings that they too may be blessed with a long happy married life with their husband, children and family.
