Ganesha bears many names like - Sumukha, Kapil, Gaj Karnak, Lambodar, Gajanan, Haridra-Ganapati, Vikata, Vinayaka, Dhumraketu, Ganadhyaksha, Vighnanashak, Ekadanta, Bhalchandra, Siddha, Ekakshara, Dhundhi, Ganapati, Heramba, Singha Ganapati, Sankashtaharan Ganapati etc
One is not allowed to see the moon today. Another festival 'Chaur Chand' recommends praying to the moon with a fruit in one's hands today. Ganesh Puja is therefore done in the afternoon.
Everyone prays to Ganesh. His rotund belly is like Kuber - The treasurer of the Gods - so he signifies, wealth, fortune, prosperity for all. His elephant face signifies Indra - the rain God - water for the farmers. His control over the mouse signifies his protection over the harvest of the crops. Ganesh is Shubh or Mangalkari and signifies, luck, intelligence, wisdom, and auspiciousness.
