The other day, I was waiting on a platform for a train to go to a seminar out of town when a young man, who had been pacing back and forth, looking at the train schedule, came up to me. He asked me if I could help with which train he should take, which stop he should get off at, and what he should do once he got off the train. As I wasn’t familiar with the area he wanted to go to, I wasn’t much help. But at the same time, I couldn’t help thinking that he certainly wasn’t prepared for his trip.
Couldn’t he have checked out the details before he set off? Did he just come to the train station and hope for the best?
This little incident started me thinking about the idea of life as a journey. How many of us “show up” in life and just hope for the best? What if we prepared a little? If you could use some help, there’s a great little exercise I’ve noticed gaining in popularity called “life mapping.”
It’s very simple. What you do is collect photos or pictures from magazines that illustrate your thought, feelings, and desires about where you are now and where you want to be or make a note of it. Set a time period for yourself – short term, say three or six months or long term, in years. Then take a large piece of poster board or other stiff paper and draw a line on it and mark it off in the time period you’ve decided on. Then paste or glue your pictures at the appropriate places along the timeline.
Working with pictures helps you access the right side of your brain and connect you to your deepest self. With these visual reminders, you are sending messages to your subconscious about what you want to manifest in your life. As you “travel” on this pictorial journey, you can change the pictures as you attain your desires or develop new ones.
